Garbage truck San Bruno Garbage Co., Inc. has provided residential garbage service to San Bruno since 1948. Our award winning curbside recycling program, which began in 1987 and has been a model for other communities throughout California, is a result of our community working together to save our environment. THINK GREEN THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!

Statistics show that during the holidays household waste increases by 25%. From food waste to packaging, Americans generate an additional one million tons of garbage a week!

To help you reduce the amount of waste you generate this holiday season, we have the following recycling and waste reduction tips for you:

Holiday Recycling Logo
  • Plan your shopping trips in a way to reduce the amount of traveling you do and try to avoid driving during commute times. Shopping in your hometown can help save gas, time and energy. If every family reduced gasoline consumption by one gallon (about 20 miles), we could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one million tons!
  • Consolidate your purchases into one bag, rather than getting a new bag at each store. Better yet, bring your own reusable tote bags when shopping!
  • Reuse gift bags and gift boxes. They can be flattened for easy storage and reusing them will save you money too.
  • Old maps, comic strips, brown paper bags decorated with stamps or children's artwork are fun and creative ways to wrap gifts, and you can do this year round!
  • Be sure to recycle your wrapping paper this year! If your recycling containers are full, place extra paper in paper bags and set next to your recycling container on your recycling service day.
  • Save a tree this season by using an artificial tree or purchasing a living tree. Living trees can be planted after the holiday and enjoyed throughout the year.
  • Drop-off unwanted packing peanuts at a local mailing center. Check your phone book for mail center locations, or call the Plastics Council Peanut Hotline at 1-800-828-2214 for a list of businesses that will reuse them.
  • Freecycle Logo
  • If you receive a new appliance this Holiday, think about donating your old one, or posting it on San Bruno's Freecycle website. Freecycle provides an easy way to reuse items within our community!

NO WASTE GIFT GIVING IDEAS:

Please Compost Your PumpkinsGOT PUMPKINS?

Now that the Halloween candy is gone and you have baked all of your favorite pumpkin breads and pies, what do you do with your leftover pumpkins? Compost them of course!

Simply place pumpkins in your yard waste cart and set curbside on your regular yard waste collection day. San Bruno Garbage Company will make sure that your old pumpkins are composted and turned into a rich soil amendment that might even be used to grow pumpkins again next year!

DON'T GET STUCK WITH YOUR SHARPS!

Beginning on September 1, 2008, a new state law takes effect that will make it illegal to dispose of sharps waste in the trash or recycling containers. It requires that all sharps waste be transported to a collection center in an approved sharps container. Home-generated sharps waste includes hypodermic needles, syringes, lancets that are used for medical purposes. Improper disposal of sharps waste poses a threat to sanitation workers, adults, children and even pets.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WITH YOUR SHARPS WASTE?

Take-back Programs By Doctors, Pharmacies, Hospitals and Medical Clinics:

Place home-generated sharps waste in biohazard containers. The containers are available for purchase at local pharmacies and some office supply stores. Then contact your health care providers, local pharmacists, hospitals or clinics to ask if they offer a take-back program.

Mail Back Services:

Visit California Integrated Waste Board for a list of companies that are authorized to provide sharps waste mail back services in California.

Additional options may become available after the new law takes effect. For updates and information, please call our Customer Service Department at 650-583-8536.
